The proportion of the two cannabinoids, in the order written. A 1:3 THC:CBD tincture contains three times as much CBD as THC and is the gentler choice. A 1:6 CBD:THC product is the reverse, with six times more THC than CBD. Read the order carefully, since brands write the ratio both ways.

Both are cannabis oil taken by mouth. A tincture is usually an infused carrier oil in a dropper bottle; an oral solution is a measured liquid, often sold with a syringe, in a format that came from the medical market. Use them the same way: a measured amount under the tongue or swallowed.

Stir a measured amount into any drink. An unflavored 300 mg bottle lets you add, for example, 5 mg to a glass of seltzer or a cocktail mixer. Once mixed, it behaves like a cannabis drink and takes 15 to 45 minutes or longer to be felt; stir well, since the oil does not always disperse evenly.

A tincture when you want to fine-tune the dose in 1 to 2 mg steps, avoid sugar, or feel the effect a little sooner by holding it under the tongue. A gummy when you want a fixed, pre-measured 5 or 10 mg dose with no measuring. The THC behaves the same way once swallowed.

Sealed and kept cool and dark, an oil-based tincture holds its potency for many months; check the date on the bottle. Heat and sunlight degrade THC and turn the oil rancid faster. Keep the cap tight and wipe the dropper after use so the threads do not gum up.
